Where in your life do you follow your heart?

Posted on Apr 12th, 2008 by ruth : batchewana ruth
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for April 12, 2008:

I suppose I follow my soul and ask my intellect not to lead, but to hover vigilant so as to avoid dire mishap.
As I read the question I realize I am not sure what is meant by 'heart'.
Compassion is often an outward embrace of other as self.  I get that and it often leads me.
But what is 'following one's heart' exactly?

'following one's heart'  - Perhaps It  means to put thinking aside and following a feeling instead. No logic just emotion.

To tell you the truth I am not sure I have ever experienced emotion without thought or emotion without body…hmmmm…..breast feeding new borns is as pure a state as I recall in life and hmmmm… kind of unified heart/body/mind/soul.
The recurrent kind of unified 'beingness' I experience is when resuscitating a stranger.  I have seconds/minutes and have to proceed quickly on 'instinct' and 'heart'.  But in fact, all the tools for logic are laid by years of study and experience and are very much hovering vigilant.  I simply do not have to bring them to consciousness and can 'follow my heart' in the moment. But again, there are layers of thought and logic and skill which are 'there', subconscious, not needing to 'lead' because they are so solid they provide a foundation for heart to proceed.  Something like that anyway.  :)
Maybe I am just not very good at dissecting what I am experiencing.

Your mind can think of severial things at once, but when you feel all those thoughts go away. A lot of people have hidden their ability to feel behind a mask of thought. Like the ones who went through the depression and World war II. You were expected to suck it up and hide your emotions. A lot of meditation students go through an awful lot of tears to get to the the other side. It's sad because the heart is where the juice is.

oh no!
Now I really feel inadequate!!
“Meditation”
:)
“prayer” I get because I just 'talk to' the universe in any form without worry or without sense of being judged and I ask the universe to “speak to me in a voice I can understand” and it does.  And this takes many forms.
But meditation…..  please explain.

Meditation Ottawa

Meditation, I sit.
Sometimes I sit on a Zafu,
sometimes a bolster,
sometimes on a Yoga block,
sometime just lotus on the floor.
Sometimes I sit in front of a mirror,
sometimes I sit facing a wall with a light behind me - so I focus on my shadow.
sometimes I sit on the front steps,
sometimes the back deck,
sometimes in the yard.
Sometimes at my alter.
Sometimes I just sit on the kitchen floor.
Sometimes I sit for 5 minutes,
Sometimes 20,
Sometimes an hour or more.
Sometimes I recite a Mantra,
Sometimes I use a set of mala beads,
Sometimes I sit with a lingam stone,
Sometimes with a crystal.
I just sit, and breath and enjoy,,,,,,,

Maybe I just gave birth to too many people and they keep interupting  :)
Or maybe the wrong career chose me and the bleeding whining (lol) hoards keep interupting
I do know this:  when I am painting a water colour, or skating or kayaking in the marsh. the whole world could burn to the ground and I would not have noticed.  :)

When you're in the “flow” in emerg. and everything is coming to you automatically and you merge your training and your gut instincts that's like meditation.  My favorite meditation is a “driving meditation.”  We think it has to happen in the classical sense, but anything in life can be a meditation.  It is when one acts “from the heart” - which to me means, acting not from ego, but as a conduit for the Larger Self.
