Why I Am An Atheist

Posted on May 22nd, 2008 by ruth : batchewana ruth
"Moore says, 'Down here, we all believe in God, guts and guns.' "

Which reminds me why I am an atheist. OK, so I suspect that I am not reallly an atheist.  For instance: I had a nice chat with Jesus this morning. He said "Blessed are the meek" and mentionned a bit about peace and sacrifice.  Silly me, but I used to always sort of associate my friend Jesus with God.  But over the past few years it seems when people talk about God they are talking about some WarLordGuy I am not acquainted with.  So I have to admit to people with BibleBeltTheology, when they ask "do you believe in God" that I am completely unknowing of their God, let alone believe in Him.  I have learned to admit "No Sir!  Not on your life Sir! I am an atheist Sir! ".
I believe in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth  :)    ________________________________________________________________________________________________   1 hour, 54 minutes ago By The Associated Press

BUTLER, Missouri - Salesmen at a Missouri car dealership are not just kicking in a free CD player or air conditioner. They are offering a free handgun with every purchase.   Through the end of the month, car buyers at Max Motors in Butler will have a choice - $250 toward either a gun purchase or gasoline.   General manager Walter Moore says that so far, most buyers have chosen the gun, adding that he suggests they opt for a semiautomatic model "because it holds more rounds."

In the fine print, the ad on the website explains, "Check written toward purchase price" and also mentions, "Approved Background Check REQUIRED. "  Moore says he suspects his "Free Handgun" ad will draw protests in some places. But not in Butler, about 100 kilometres south of Kansas City.

Moore says, "Down here, we all believe in God, guts and guns."

I read that article as well, and was nearly dumbfounded!  I too, am reluctant (and that's putting it mildly) to claim a Christian perspective because of how much the faith has been manipulated and twisted to suit the means of those in control.  Then again, that's almost every single religion that gets caught in that trap.  If you get a chance, search for “Bullhorn Nooma” on youtube.com (it's split into two parts) or on www.nooma.com.  You'll see that many other people are just as frustrated with that mindset, but that there is a productive way to approach it.  :-)

“Tell me about the God you don't believe in, I bet I don't believe in him either” someone once wrote…  I like that, along with “I have been looking at God all my life through the same eyes that he uses to look at me”.

I sent my atheist manifesto to my cousin Alfred in Sault Ste Marie and he said:
I think that WarLordGuy you're referring to wears a U.S. flag as a cape. Some sort of superhero I guess. Never met him myself.

haha
But I hate to paint my US cousins with the WLG.  Some days the WLG wears a US flag for sure.  But that is only out of profiteerism.  The WLG would wear the flag of whatever nation state had the power and money in His estimation.  He is not loyal to the USA.  He is fickle.  He follows His self interest.

What came to mind is a song from The Beatles, “White Album.”

“Happiness is a warm gun
Happiness is a warm gun
When I hold you in my arms
And i feel my finger on your trigger
I know no one can do me no harm
Because happiness is a warm gun
-yes it is.”

It's all so phallic, isn't it?  For some people, the closest thing they'll ever experience to “God Consciousness” is to be armed to the teeth.  I think “God” has multiple personality disorder.  They say MPD comes from severe early trauma, like perhaps the “Big Bang” which started the Whole Universe.  “Big Bang?”  Aie, that also explains the attraction to guns and things which go “BOOM!”.  It's funny, for me, God seems closest when all my defenses are down.  I wonder if a person could put the $250 toward the purchase of bullet-proof glass instead?
